A damaged tooth has a way of disrupting everything. Maybe a molar cracked while you were eating, or an old filling you’d been putting off finally became a real problem. Whatever the case, the idea of juggling multiple dental appointments just to fix one tooth can make people delay treatment longer than they should, and that usually makes things worse.

That’s the appeal of same-day crowns. With CEREC technology, your dentist can design, mill, and place a permanent crown in a single visit. No temporary crown to babysit for two weeks. No second appointment. No back-and-forth with an off-site lab.

At Smith Dental Group, this is the kind of care we’ve built our practice around: treatment that actually respects your time without cutting corners on quality.

What a dental crown is and why it is used

A dental crown is a custom restoration that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth. It is designed to protect and strengthen a damaged or weakened tooth.

Dentists use crowns with patients when a tooth:

  • Has a large cavity that cannot be repaired with a filling
  • Is cracked or fractured
  • Has undergone root canal treatment
  • Is worn down from grinding or long-term use
  • Needs to support a dental bridge

The goal is simple: bring the tooth back to full function, restore its shape and strength, and make sure it looks like it belongs in your mouth.

This is what makes CEREC different

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It uses advanced digital technology to design and create a custom crown right in the dental office. Instead of traditional impressions, the dentist uses a digital scanner to capture a detailed image of your tooth. This image is used to design the crown with precision.

Once the design is complete, a milling machine creates the crown from a block of ceramic material. The entire process happens in the same visit. After the crown is created, it is placed and adjusted to ensure a comfortable fit before being bonded permanently to the tooth.

How was the traditional crown process?

The traditional process meant two separate appointments, sometimes weeks apart. The dentist would prep the tooth, take impressions, and send everything to an off-site lab. In the meantime, you’d leave with a temporary crown, one you had to be careful with, since it wasn’t built to last. Once the permanent crown came back from the lab, you’d return to have it placed.

It worked, but it wasn’t exactly convenient.

The benefits of same-day crowns

One of the biggest advantages of same-day crowns is the convenience. Everything is completed in a single appointment. For many patients, this means:

  • No temporary crown to worry about
  • Fewer disruptions to their schedule
  • Faster resolution of discomfort or damage

There is also a benefit in terms of comfort. Digital scanning eliminates the need for traditional impression materials, which some patients find uncomfortable.

CEREC crowns are made from ceramic that’s carefully matched to your natural tooth color, so the final result looks like it was always part of your smile, not like something that was added.

Are same-day crowns as strong as traditional crowns?

CEREC crowns are designed to be strong and long-lasting. The ceramic materials used are specifically chosen for their durability and appearance. Like any restoration, how long it lasts comes down to how well you take care of it: regular brushing, flossing, and keeping up with routine checkups.

When is a same-day crown recommended?

Your dentist may recommend a CEREC crown if:

  • You have a damaged or weakened tooth that needs protection
  • A large filling has failed
  • A tooth has been treated with a root canal
  • You want to restore both function and appearance quickly

During your visit, the dentist will evaluate your tooth and determine whether a same-day crown is the best approach for your situation.

Your same-day crown appointment

The process is simpler than most people expect. Once the tooth is prepped (meaning any damaged or decayed areas are removed), your dentist uses a digital scanner to capture a precise image of it. No messy impression trays.

From there, the crown is designed right in the office using specialized software, with your bite and surrounding teeth taken into account. When the design is ready, it gets sent to the milling machine, which carves the crown from a ceramic block in under an hour. Once it’s done, your dentist checks the fit, makes any fine adjustments, and bonds it in place.

Start to finish, most appointments wrap up in a single visit.

Taking care of your crown

Good habits for your same-day crown are similar to those you have with your natural teeth. They include:

  • Brushing at least twice a day
  • Flossing daily
  • Avoiding extremely hard foods that could damage the crown
  • Visiting your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings

With proper care, your crown can remain strong and functional for many years.

A faster way to restore your smile

A damaged tooth does not have to mean multiple visits or weeks of waiting. Advances in technology have made it possible to complete many restorations in a single appointment.
